Healthy Homes Heating Standard
Ensuring warmth and comfort, the Healthy Homes Standards mandate that rental properties must have heating systems capable of maintaining a minimum indoor temperature of 18°C in living areas on the coldest days. This regulation aims to improve tenant health and well-being, reduce mold and dampness, and enhance energy efficiency.
In the Heating Standard, key points include:
- Heating Capacity: Landlords must install heaters capable of achieving and maintaining 18°C in living rooms. If existing heaters fall short, additional heating options can be used to meet the standard (Ministry of Housing).
- Grace Period: New or renewed tenancies must comply within 90 to 120 days, while all private rentals must comply by 1 July 2025 (Tenancy Services).
- Compliance: Non-compliance can result in penalties up to $7,200 under the Residential Tenancies Act 1986 (Ministry of Housing).
