What Is the Healthy Homes Heating Standard?
The heating standard requires every rental’s main living room to have a fixed heating source that can heat the room to 18°C, even on the coldest days. That means:
- A heat pump
- A wood burner
- A flued gas heater Or another approved fixed heater
Unflued gas heaters, open fires, and portable electric heaters don’t cut it.

What Is the Healthy Homes Ventilation Standard?
Proper airflow is essential for preventing mould and moisture — two major health risks. Under the Healthy Homes Standards, rental properties must have:
- Working extractor fans in bathrooms and kitchens
- Openable windows in living areas, kitchens, and bedrooms
